Clay Sculpture Instructor: Helene Hirmes Supply List Pottery/sculpture class prices include a maximum of 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, firing fees and use of the pottery studio during regular office hours when no classes are scheduled. Dear Sculpture Students, Welcome new and returning students. ArtCenter Manatee has a great pottery studio. They have many of the things we will need, but you might want to bring some of the items listed below. Supply list: Board - approx 12" 14" or 16" square ( They have some small ones, but not large ones. If you bring your own board, cover it at home with a piece of heavy plastic and tape it to the underside.) Plastic Bag - large black bag to cover sculpture in progress Turntable - (they have some but a plastic Rubbermaid one will do) 6 inch ruler Tools - Any kind you may have from a pottery class or from a friend. There are some good tools in the studio. Wooden Dowel - Approx 16 - 18" long x 3/8 thick. (Used as an armature if you plan to make a large piece that needs support. Spray Bottle Hirmes _ Clay Sculpture - Faces, Figures and Beyond Optional - If you would like to sculpt a head, and would like to use someone you know as a model, here is an easy way to try your hand at it. Take 7 photos of the person. Focus the camera at eye level (not point up or down at the subject). Zoom in as closely as possible so that you have barely any background in the photos. Photo 1 - Directly in front of the subject Photo 2 & 3 - Both Profiles Photos 4 & 5 - Both Diagonals Photo 6 - Back of head Photo 7 - Have the person sit on the floor. You will aim the camera, from above the subject’s head (toward the floor), trying to photograph the shape of the subject’s forehead and cheek bones. When sculpting you need to see your subject in 3 -D, from all angles. IF you do not want to bother taking these photos, that is fine. You may use your imagination and be a creative as you like.
